My belief is “better safe than sorry” when it comes to EMF Protection. So, just what are electromagnetic fields?
Well, they are invisible areas of radiation, or energy produced by Electricity. Which is simply the movement of current, or electrons, through a wire.
Electric Field
The electric field, electricity, produced by voltage is pressured to push electrons through the wire; similar to that of water pushing through a hose. Therefore, the electric field increases in strength as voltage increases and measured in V/m (volts per meter).
These electric fields are produced whether any device is turned on or not! And, electric fields are easily weakened due to the interference of walls and other objects.
Magnetic Field
The magnetic field results from current flowing through electrical devices (wire). As the current increases, the devices increase in strength. Once you get further from the source, the magnetic field decreases very quickly and is measured in μT, or millionths of a tesla (microtesla).
These magnetic fields are produced only when you have flowing current. Usually requiring that device to be turned on. And, magnetic fields are able to pass thru just about any material including buildings and all living things as well to.
Together referred to as Electromagnetic Fields (EMF)~
When you put the two together, the forces in EMFs are caused by electromagnetic radiation, with two main categories:
~ Higher-frequency EMFs ~ Includes x-rays and gamma rays. These are in the ionizing radiation part of the electromagnetic spectrum; which, can damage DNA or cells directly.
~ Low- to mid-frequency EMFs ~ Includes magnetic fields from electric power lines and appliances, radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, and visible light. These EMFs are in the non-ionizing radiation part of the electromagnetic spectrum. They are not known to damage DNA or cells directly.
What are Harmful EMFs?
It seems that our love for having the latest and greatest tech gadgets has put our owns lives and health at risk. The risks are through two different fields;
~ High Risk electromagnetic fields ~ Electroshock is used to put our hearts back into rhythm. Radiation is used to treat cancers. (this radiation is produced by huge machine using lots of electricity) And, Nuclear radiation is a source of EMF as well.
~ Low Risk electromagnetic fields ~ They are more and more in use and in almost every home and office. Cellphones, microwaves, programmable appliances, routers, even light bulbs emit an electromagnetic field (EMF). And, definitely can’t forget getting sunburned in the summertime!
