Textile Arts Gallery

Thanks for stopping by to check out my Textile Arts Gallery. This gallery will be a continuous ongoing tribute to all the projects I’ve completed over the years. A history of yarn and fabric art projected through many blankets, throws, and other fun projects.

I have labeled each one with as much information I can remember, along with photos of each. At the bottom of each page there will be a link to the next page in the gallery. If the link is not working, I will have a message “This is the current end of the gallery. Come back later to see more as I add more soon.”

Textile Arts Gallery First

Textile Arts Gallery "New Beginnings 2023" crocheted throw.

Starting off, I want to say I have been crocheting since I was nine years old, my cousin taught me how. And ever since then, my love for textile arts and crafting with it has just taken off. Also, I’ve been crafting since I was very young and loved art classes in school too.

So, let’s go with the first textile arts gallery item. It is a lap throw that I just completed in the New Year, 2023. I named it “New Beginnings” of course for the obvious. Our future is wide open.

“NEW BEGINNINGS 2023” ~ An approx. 34” x 49” lap blanket.

Created with the following;

  • 2 jumbo skeins of Super Saver Ombre ~ Anthracite
  • 4 skeins of Yarn Bee Ashley ~ Whimsy
  • 1 skein of Yarn Bee Ashley ~ Cloudy
  • 1 skein of Yarn Bee Ashley ~ Limelight
  • Hook size J

The yarn bee skeins were some end of season big clearance sales. Hobby Lobby was selling out their older lines and switching out for newer lines. I was able to get many odd varieties of yarns for big discounts. Then later I could mix and match yarns to make my creations. Then, as I create different projects, I have an assortment to choose from without costing a small fortune. Plus, it’s more fun trying to come up with a new project this way.

What was done to get the look.

In this project, I challenged myself to hold 3 colors at one time, instead of the 2 they suggested on Youtube. You will notice this with the single skein colors noted above. I did really enjoy the challenge of figuring out how to incorporate the singles. Unfortunately, the 4 skeins of whimsy was not enough, so I felt I needed to add more. I only had 2 more skeins of the same brand, just different colors. So, I decided to use them like I did. You can see this from the pictures I’ve added to this page. Hope you enjoy them!

Furthermore, this entire project was created using only chain stitches and double crochet stitches. That being said, the challenge was carrying colors together but hidden at the same time. Then, when I got to the three colors and alternated two of them; Now that got a little crazy trying not to tie up all three colors in knots. Stopping many times to undue tangles was quite a pain, but I am happy with the end result though. See for yourself with the closeup photo.

How Did I Get Started?

First, lately, I like to find a really nice cool easy stitch that happens to strike me at the time. Usually I’m online viewing videos from YouTube for this. Afterwards, now that I have the perfect stitch, I choose the yarn, whether heavy, medium or light weight. Finally, I choose the hook size based on the yarn weight. Each skein of yarn usually has a label around it and gives you a suggested hook size to use. And, I try to stay within that range, give or take a hook size. Sometimes the hook size is also determined by the stitch and if they are tight stitches or looser stitches; depending on the look I want to achieve.

Prior, back a few years ago, including recently, I got patterns and stitches from crochet books I’ve collected over the years. Even a few magazines too. Anytime I need ideas there is plenty to choose from, whether online or in the books I have. It’s always exciting to start a project created by me, especially when it comes out looking better than you anticipated.
